christmas day

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic day. I didn't end up going up to Scotland unfortunately as the weather was too bad for my dad to travel up, so we had Christmas at home. Also just incase anyone's wondering, I'm posting because I now have a new laptop! I've finally managed to get enough money saved up for it so yay and I can now get my blog posts up. After not having one for a month it's actually been really refreshing, I've been reading a lot more - hello Hunger Games. (On that note - I saw Catching Fire finally the other night and can I say it was absolutely amazing.) So please take that into consideration and get off your laptops and switch off all your technology once in a while, there's so much more to do out there but don't worry I'll end it there and not go all cheesy on you all :)

I had some of the loveliest food cooked by my mum, the best part of the morning being the sausage rolls pictured above! We watched the best film ever, it's definitely one of my favourites - It's A Wonderful Life. It's become a family tradition to watch that every year, if you haven't seen it I recommend it! I loved my presents which I am so so grateful for (thank you to those if you are reading this!) I decided not to post them as I don't want to come across as rude but also because I don't think that's the point of Christmas. If you follow me on Instagram though, you'll have seen some of my lovely presents on there. What Christmas is about to me is pictured above: family (except there's only me and my cat on here as I'm not putting photos of my family on here for privacy reasons) and food aha. The second set of food photos are actually of Boxing Day, so basically I've eaten my whole body weight in food over the past few days. But why not enjoy it, right? It's Christmas after all.

New Year's Day is very close too now so I want to wish you all a Happy New Year and I hope 2014 is the best one yet for you all!

Sorry for not posting last week, incase anyone didn't know, as mentioned in my last post, my laptop is broken and cannot be fixed, nooo. And I won't be getting a new laptop until after January. I will be sorting out a schedule too so that after Christmas I will be posting every week on the same day and twice a week so my blog will be running better.

Also I reached 100 Bloglovin followers this month! Thank you ever so much to everyone who is following me and reading my blog, I really appreciate it.

I'm not one to make wishlists, well I am but not publicly, I love to make lists, to do lists etc but wishlists are normally for myself to look at as a reminder. Plus I feel really guilty and awkward asking for things anyway aha. However this year I actually made a Christmas one much to the suprise of my family and these are a few items that I put on there.

I'm off to Scotland on Christmas Eve after work and we're going to be up there until the 28th, this will probably be my last post until then, so I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas! Have a great day everyone and Merry Christmas!

...you can't catch me i'm the gingerbread man!

From left to right: Shampoo, Shower Gel + Bubble Bath / Cookie Jar / USB Stick / Cookie MouldNecklace / Nail Transfers

Before I go into the post, I just thought I'd quickly mention on here incase you don't follow me on twitter where I already said. My laptop broke the other day and I heard back from the repair shop and it unfortunately can't be fixed. I'll still try and participate in twitter chats and hopefully will be able to post regularly still as my mum is kindly letting me borrow her laptop. But just incase I'm absent for a week or so, this is the reason why. I've been quite busy the past few weeks that's why there's only 2 posts on here in the whole of November! Also last thing, I had to return my glasses as they didn't fit right and after me asking them to be adjusted multiple times, they were bent so I just took them back. Now back onto the post..

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts I am a little obsessed with gingerbread men.. so why not make a full post on just that. Yay. I thought with Christmas coming up I'd make a post with some different gingerbread themed items for Christmas present suggestions.

And for a finishing touch, I also found these two sites where you can get wrapping paper and gift tags from.

And here is my collection!

The red box was a gift but I think it's from TK Maxx, which is where I bought the tin. The biscuit tin was a gift so I'm not sure where it's from but I found multiple sites where you can buy them online that I included above. The travel mug is from New Look (and did you know Costa will let you bring it with you and they will put your choice of drink in the mug?! So when the Christmas take-away cups are gone, you can bring your own in!). The pin was a gift so unsure where it is from, the bracelet charm was from Links of London and the Christmas tree ornament was from Clintons. The advent calendar was bought from this gift shop in my local town but you can buy it online from 'Not on the High Street'.

Hope you find something that you like or it gives you an idea of what to get someone for Christmas. I can't believe it's already December!

new glasses?!

... I got new glasses!!

I don't really wear my glasses every day all the time anymore as I wear contacts. But whenever I'm at home and on the laptop I will wear them as I don't want to damage my eyes. Even though I have been quite bad and not worn my contact lenses as often as I should be, oops. My eyesight hasn't been affected by it though and my prescription is the same so yay. And seeing as my other pair are years old I thought I'd treat myself to some new ones. They're a lovely brown/tortoiseshell colour and are Ralph Lauren (ooooh hello). I'm still getting used to how they look as they're very different to what I'm use to but I like them. They need to be adjusted slightly though as they don't sit on my face right but other than that they're great. I bought them at Vision Express and even got a 'free' pair, although they don't have my prescription in as that would have been extra money, so they're just a back up incase something happens to my main pair, which I hope nothing does happen.

Anyway that's enough of my face for one post! And guess who's finally finished their Christmas shopping?! All I need to do now is wrap them up and post some cards nearer the time. And on the subject of Christmas, I really don't get how people can prefer Winter to Summer, Christmas is the only good thing about I think. It is absolutely freezing at the moment. I need to drink gallons of peach tea to keep me warm, so I hope everyone else is staying warm!

christmas jumpers

Gingerbread Man Jumper - New Look

Sorry for the lack of posting in the last week, I've been really busy with work but now that I've got a routine sorted, I'll be straight back to the blogging. So apologies and thanks for sticking with me. I don't know if I've mentioned this before but I love gingerbread men, some would say on the obsessive side aha. Even though I'm not someone who normally wears Christmas Jumpers, I saw this at work and knew immediately that I had to buy it and guess who has this beauty in her wardrobe?!

This isn't a sponsored post by New Look or any of the others I've posted about for the matter, I do work there after all so can you blame me that I've found so many nice things to buy? But I thought on the theme of Christmas Jumpers, I'd show you some of my favourites. And some others I've seen on the High Street, but I won't go mad, the Gingerbread man one is the only one I'm having, it will be my pride and joy. I've also included some for Men's as I don't know about you, but my dad and brother are ridiculously difficult to buy for. I've only just started my Christmas shopping too, every year I say I'll finish it by October, I'm not the only one am I? When in reality, I don't start until mid November and surprise surprise, that is exactly what's happened this year, oops. And you can't really go wrong with a Christmas jumper. So I hope I've helped at least someone out with an idea.

Polar Bear Jumper - New Look / Reindeer Jumper - New Look / Gingerbread Man Jumper - Topshop / Robin Jumper - John Lewis

Elf Jumper - New Look / White Reindeer Jumper - Next / Green Reeinder Jumper - Topman / Navy Stag Jumper - Topman

As you can see.. there is another gingerbread man jumper out there, but I'm going to be good and like I said, have only one. But it does give me an idea for a new post, so keep your eyes peeled.

DIY home cinema

I love going to the cinema but sometimes funds are low!  My solution? Make my own cinema in my room.
It's so easy and I love how it looks, with the pretty fairy lights all around my bed!

As it's Halloween tonight, I thought it would be a perfect excuse to write a post on films as I know a lot of people will either be watching a scary film or telling each other scary stories. I prefer the first option, but on that note, not too scary a film. So I've picked Harry Potter! Who doesn't love Harry Potter anyway.

What you'll need:
Laptops
Film/films of your choice
Blankets
Cushions
Food
Drink

And this will probably happen if you have a pet too.. But the more the merrier right?

I love snuggling up in my blanket, especially on a cold night. With the cold weather now here, that's one of the best things, along with a nice hot drink... making it a bonus of having the cinema in your room! You can have hot chocolate, tea or coffee with you! Not to mention stuffing your face with nice little treats. Perfect for a night in with friends or a girlie night with your sister and you don't have to go to all the hassle of getting dressed up to go to the cinema, you can even go to your friend's house in a onesie if you like! A home cinema is all about comfort and being in the company of your friends.
Also as Halloween will be over fairly soon, Christmas would be a great opportunity to try this out for yourself. You don't need much as I've shown above and that's a really lovely way to spend an evening or a whole day if you want to have a film marathon. One of those lazy days that you need one in a while, it can be really relaxing. Why not try it out!

halloween nails

I'm not usually one for wearing acrylic nails, but I really wanted to do something Halloween-y and seeing as my nail painting isn't the best lately, I thought rather than doing nail art myself, I'd get some ready made ones. I love Halloween and haven't done anything fancy dress for it in ages and the closest I can get to without dressing up is doing my nails. And personally, I think they look great! I bought some for the first time from Primark a while ago and they looked awful, I took them off almost instantly. These are from Claire's Accessories and are really good. They're not exactly cheap as they were £5.50 but comparing them to the other High Street shops I went into that had Halloween nails, these are the best value for money. And you are getting two sets so it's not bad. There's 24 in the pack and 5 different designs in different sizes, so you can mix and match which is what I've done on both hands. They're pre-glued which is another plus as you don't have the hassle of getting glue all over you, as I would tend to do knowing me. I've filed them down quite a bit so that they're not too long as I want to be careful not to get them caught while I work at the till point at work. If these last quite a while, I'm going to probably look into some Christmas ones as I love Christmas nails.

new look necklaces

Having recently got a job at New Look, I bought these three lovely necklaces from there a few weeks ago, when I was buying my uniform. I chose 2 gold ones and one silver as I could mix and match them with my outfits. There are so many pretty ones out at the moment but I was good and stuck to 3. I think my favourite is the deer one, it really adds something to an outfit, especially a plain white or black top. I love the detail of it and I've had some lovely comments off people at work which is really nice. But I think the one I'm getting the most use out of at the moment is the gold necklace in the second photo, as it's more versatile. Even though they are quite chunky looking necklaces, none of them are heavy and it doesn't hurt your neck so it's great, they're really comfy. I know some necklaces can be quite uncomfortable to wear but these aren't like that at all, they don't even get tangled up with my lanyard and nothing has broken off, so they're of a good quality. Sorry for the really bad lighting in the last photo, wherever I moved the necklace, there were shadows all around it because of the dark colour.

On the subject of statement necklaces, I recently wrote a guest post on ShoppingUnlike, you can read my post here. I would love it if you checked it out!

22nd birthday and haul!

Yesterday it was my 22nd birthdaaaaay!

I had a really great day and I am so so grateful for having all the lovely presents. I love them all, my family are amazing. Thank you if you're reading this! And thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes.

This post will be photo heavy, so just a pre-warning.

Beautiful flowers from a great friend of mine, arrived on Saturday. And I was so excited aha that I opened them on my birthday eve. Sunflowers are my favourites and they look so pretty!

Present opening. I am so so lucky to have received these, so happy with everything.

The best cards ever. The cat one was from my parents, Cooper steals my dad's spot on the sofa everytime my dad gets up aha so it's perfect. And the royal card was from my brother. Love it.

Homemade breakfast, potato cakes, sausages, grilled sausages and fried egg. And then there was the 'American breakfast foods' (my sister skyped from university and when the American food was mentioned she went 'Is that Sophie?' She knows me so well! aha) but I was so stuffed that they were left over and I got the enjoy the lovely pancakes today.

My baby asleep in the living room, SO CUTE. I bought him that when we first got him and since yesterday, he's been on it ever since.

We went out to a really nice pub for lunch and I had chicken, bacon and leek pie with a puff pastry lid, chunky chips, green beans and pies. And for dessert, affogato al caffè with pistachio and almond flavoured ice cream. The food was so good. I don't think I've ever felt so full.

Not the best photos but as we went back to the car I noticed they had horses so had to get a photo and then I saw the pigs and I went AW out loud aha. Pigs were my favourite when I was around 5 and then I found out they bite and they weren't my favourite any more aha. But they're still cute.

A fantastic birthday cake made by my mum, filled with Italian patisserie cream. Sorry for the bad quality photo, I took it on my phone.

Thank you so so much family and friends and everyone for a great day!

stylight - a fashion community

A week ago I was introduced to Stylight and thought I would write a post about it.  If you haven’t heard of this site before, it’s basically a community for fashion bloggers and fashion lovers where you can upload your own look, browse others looks or ‘heart’ an item and add it to a wishlist for future reference.

A well-known blogger that’s a member on this site, is Carrie from Wish wish wish. If you love posting OOTD’s or any outfit that matter, this is a great site for people to use, especially bloggers.

A good way to describe the site would be a mixture of Lookbook and Pinterest, just to get across an idea of what it’s like. And who loves those sites? Bloggers! So this is a great site to have a look around. You can find out exactly where the item is bought from and buy it yourself online if you so wish. Personally, when I find a photo online and then can’t find out where it’s sold online, you know that one item of clothing you see on a celebrity that you’d love to own yourself but can never find?  It frustrates me aha. And I bet I’m not the only one who feels like this, right? Stylight helps you out no end and if you see a bag on a blogger’s look that you’d love to own, it takes you straight to that website and after a few clicks it can be yours. Now isn’t that so much easier!

I had a look through some of the looks and picked my favourite 3 looks from the site.

Do you have any particular favourite looks you’ve seen? What are they?

chicken chow mein noodles

For a while now, I've been wanting noodles. I love chinese food and when I get something in my head it (be it going someplace or shopping or doing something or eating something etc) it won't go away until it's out of my system. And recently being noodle obsessed, though that's not that much different for usual, because I love noodles regardless, all I've had in my head is when am I going to get the chance to have some chinese food. So the other week I thought rather than go pay for something, I'll buy the ingredients and make it all from scratch. I've made stir fry before but never a proper chicken chow mein and I'm so glad I tried it because it turned out well and now I can noodles enough for another 3 days. I made 4 portions worth so I can put the rest in the fridge and have for lunch in the next few days so yay. But I guess it depends on how big your portions are, because some people might only find that this recipe gives them 3 portions.

I intended to follow the chicken chow mein recipe from the BBC Food website, but after looking through the ingredients, I changed it around to suit me and made my own recipe. I hope you enjoy it if you try it out!

Ingredients:
  • 150g medium egg noodles
  • 1-2 tbsp olive oil
  • 300g skinless chicken breast, cut into chunks or strips (I used a 400g pack and should have used the last bit, so 300/400g - it doesn't matter too much!)
  • 4 tbsp of soy sauce (1 for the chicken, 3 at the end)
  • 1 tsp five-spice powder
  • 1 tsp chilli sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornflour
  • 150g bean sprouts
  • 2 spring onions sliced lengthways
  • 1 red pepper, de-seeded and finely sliced
  • black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain them, then rise under cold water and drain them again. Put to one side while you prepare the chicken.
  2. Place the chicken strips in a bowl and add the soy sauce, five-spice powder and chilli sauce. Mix well and then dust with cornflour
  3. Heat a frying pan (a wok is best but I used a frying pan for this so it works just as well really), add the olive oil and then add the chicken and stir fry them for 4 minutes, until the chicken is cooked.
  4. Add the red pepper to the chicken and stir fry for 1 minute.
  5. Ad the beansprouts and spring onion and stir fry for 30 seconds. Stir in the noodles, add some more soy sauce, to make it to your liking and some black pepper.
  6. Serve onto a plate and it's ready to eat!

Nivea pure and natural range

I bought the Nivea Pure and Natural range a few weeks ago and thought it was about time to review it, as I've now been using it for a while and know more about how it's reacting to my skin.

I've used Nivea products before, having very dry and sensitive skin, it's really good and I'll admit I don't moisturize a lot at the moment and that's down to pure laziness. Then I complain about having scabs on my legs, well that's what happens when you scratch and scratch and do nothing about it..! So learn from me and moisturize, DON'T scratch if your legs or arms get itchy. It'll just make it worse and sore. Nivea's very good and I like the Vaseline cocoa butter too. Anyway, the products I bought were actually for my face, so I should stop rambling and get onto that.

The three products were: Cleansing Lotion, Cleansing Toner and the Soothing Day Cream. Before I used the Boots Tea Tree and Witch-hazel range and while that was good, I started not to like it after a while. But with the Nivea, straight away it makes my skin feel smooth and clean. You know that feeling you sometimes get on your face, even after having a shower and washing it, where it just still doesn't feel clean? Well this really does take that away and I feel squeaky clean, not to sound too cheesy saying that. And with it being only a few weeks since I've been using it, I've already seen a difference. My skin looks more hydrated and even though I don't get many spots (I usually just have one in the most unfortunate place like the middle of my forehead that's really obvious), I haven't had any sign of spots or bad skin since using it. Maybe that's just luck though but still, I'm liking it very much.

The Cleansing and Lotion toner both have bio argan oil and bio aloe vera. Everyone raves about argan oil and I haven't actually used it before this, but I can see why everyone likes it so much. And the products all smell really nice. It's not overly perfumed, so it's not overpowering - which I really can't stand in lotions as for one I'll probably end up having an allergic reaction to it or two it just doesn't feel like it'll do me much good because it's not that natural.

With the toner, you obviously put it on with a cotton wool but with the cleanser, it says you can use either your fingers or a cotton wool. I've tried it both ways just to see which I preferred and I think I prefer it with my fingers. Of course my hands are cleaned before I do it but I just find that with a cotton wool you don't get as much of it onto your skin as you do with your hands, because it'll soak into the wool. Whereas if you use your fingers, you can massage it well onto your face and it just feels like you're not wasting the product and your skin is getting the most out it. It's up to you how you use it, but that's just my personal preference. And the soothing day cream comes in the cutest little glass pot, which is great and you can use it once it's finished. I've still got a lot left but I know I'm going to be buying this again.

bread lover - piadina recipe

Yesterday I tried my first attempt at making some piadine. They're italian flatbread and as a lover of bread these are the best things ever. You can eat them with almost anything, hot or cold, as a sandwich, with soup, with a dip or even by itself.  My favourite is with some salami and rocket, yum. Mine don't look the best but the did taste how they're meant to so that was a success. They're meant to be more round though.

I took the recipe ""Piadine Romagnole - Flatbread flavoured with oregano" from Gino D'Acampo's "Italian Home Baking" book. It's a really easy recipe to follow and these don't take long at all to make. The writing in the parenthesis below is my own words but the rest is credit to Gino D'Acampo and taken out of the book.

Ingredients (makes 4 piadine):

  • 180g strong white flour (I used plain flour and it worked just as well) plus some extra for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil plus extra for brushing
  • 110ml warm water

Instructions

  1. Brush the inside of a large bowl with oil.
  2. Sift the flour in a large bowl (not the oiled bowl mentioned above); add in the oregano and the salt. Make a well in the centre and pour in the oil with the water. Mix all the ingredients together to form a dough.
  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in the oiled bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave to rest in a warm place away from draughts for 20 minutes.
  4. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and roll each one into an 18cm disc. Cover with a tea towel until ready to cook.
  5. Lightly oil a large frying  pan and place over a medium heat.
  6. Cook each disc for 1 minutes on each side until they re staring to brown all over.
  7. Serve the piadine warm to accompany your favourite soup or dips.
If you love bread too, you need to try these out!
